Bathinda is a historic place having its roots in the Indus Valley Civilization. It has a mystical undercurrent in the sense of being the origin of social reformation movement led by Baba Sheikh Farid Shakarganj in a nearby place, Faridkot, and subsequently continued the tradition by Haji Rattan, a saint and later by Guru Gobind Singh in early 18th century. The CUP identifies itself with these universal symbols of humanism and harmony who were also responsible for the general trend of education in the sense of enlightenment and upliftment of the downtrodden. The Guru subsequently established a new seat of learning, what he loved to callGuru Ki Kashi, at a nearby place Talwandi Sabo (Damdama Sahib) where Guru dictated the Adi Granth. The ideas have found expression through the famous old tree Van (Salvadora oleoides), which remains evergreen even in harsh conditions, providing shelter to livestock and the inhabitants, becoming a source of happiness and symbol of ‘Tree of Knowledge’ which is taken as the basic motif for the logo. The open book below represents the scholarship spreading message of light leading to knowledge and wisdom. |
