The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar is an Ashrama. It has a residential Senior Secondary School for boys of classes from VI to XII. It is administered by the monks of the Ramakrishna Order, under the direct control and guidance of the Headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal. Vidyapith was honoured with the National Award for outstanding work in the field of Child Welfare by the Government of India in 1986. It functions according to the ideas and ideals of education given by Swami Vivekananda. Being inspired by Swami Turiyananda, one of the closest disciples of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna, some young monks took initiative and started this school in 1922. They began with only three students in a small house at Mihijam in the then Bihar State. However, soon after in 1923, when Mihijam was found inconvenient, the school was ultimately shifted to Deoghar, and permanently founded on a piece of land where it now exists. Request for admission, which is to be made in the printed application form issued by Vidyapith, must reach the Secretary on or before the stipulated date. Detailed guidelines in this regard are provided in the leaflet “General Information for Admission”. Faulty or incomplete information in the Admission Form will not be accepted, and will therefore stand cancelled automatically. There is no provision for reservation of seat in VidyapithSelected candidates will have to submit the Transfer Certificate within 15 days of admission positively.Any chronic disease (including habitual bed wetting) is held as bar to admission Boys later discovered physically unfit or harmful by nature are liable to lose their seats, even after joining the school. Results of the boys not selected for 2ndphase screening test and not qualified in the final screening for admission will not be intimated.
The school is known all over the country for its persistent remarkable academic achievements. It has a cosmopolitan complexion in the composition of its inmates, having students from various states and communities of the nation. It is meant exclusively for boys and permanently affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. Admission to its Secondary Section is restricted to standard VI alone. However, a few students from other schools are also admitted in class XI, in case the seats are available for them after giving entry to its own students who do well in class X Board examination. The school offers education in science stream only in its Senior Secondary Section. The boys are taken in it entirely on merit ascertained by dint of written, oral and other necessary tests.Deoghar, being the holy abode of Lord Shiva affectionately addressed by all as Baba Baidyanath, is one of the most significant places of pilgrimage in the country. It is an ancient city, which harbours in its bosom a body part (heart) of Sati the Divine Mother, for which it is being identified as one of the Puranic fifty two Sakti pithas. Hence it has been perpetually drawing devotees from different corners of India for centuries. Sri Ramakrishna, his spiritual consort Sri Sarada Devi and his principal disciple Swami Vivekananda too came here on pilgrimage. Accordingly, Deoghar with Vidyapith occupies an important special position in the history of Ramakrishna Movement.
