About us The British School, New Delhi is unique. Not just because it is home to a rich cultural mix of almost 700 students with 50 nationalities ranging from ages 3 to 18. Nor because it operates a not-for-profit system with an inclusive approach. The reason is simple. It is more than a school; it is a family. The British School with an Indian soul In India, family comes first; and this is just one of the special Indian traditions that we embrace. As an international school that caters to internationally-mobile students, we welcome and celebrate all cultures and nationalities while ensuring the Indian spirit shines through. We offer a largely British curriculum that matches international standards and at the same time, draws inspiration from the rich experiences that life in India provides. How it all began The school was first started in July 1963 by a group of British parents with 40 students representing 6 nationalities in a residential colony in New Delhi. They were supported by the British High Commissioner and in 1969 moved the school to its present site in Chanakyapuri, the heart of the diplomatic area. Today the school is still ‘owned’ and managed by students’ parents who form The British School Society. What we believe From the beginning we have been dedicated to educating students for life, challenging them to fulfil their individual potential in a stimulating learning environment which fosters high moral and ethical standards, developing a sense of awareness for the world around them. Today nothing has changed and our students’ academic and personal achievements bear testimony to this. Maintaining the highest international standards Our caring and motivated teachers are committed to preparing each student for top-class university options worldwide. The British School, New Delhi is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and recognised as an IB World School. It is affiliated to, and is an examination centre for both Cambridge International Examinations and Edexel, UK. It is a member of NESA (Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools), the Round Square Conference of Schools, UCAS and the College Board. Reception through Year 9 follows the National Curriculum of England with suitable adaptations to take into account our location in New Delhi. Students in Year 10 and 11 have a wide range of IGCSE / GCSE options to choose from, and Years 12 and 13 prepare for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or Certificate Programme. We understand that each student is an individual with different needs We welcome students with moderate learning difficulties (students with special educational needs) at all levels provided that we are able to support and meet their needs and are able to give them the chance to fulfil their potential. With a teacher to student ratio of 1:6 we always know each student’s level of attainment, rate of progress and well-being. We take an inclusive approach to development and as a result, we integrate students with special needs into everyday mainstream school life and age-appropriate classroom environments wherever possible. Where it benefits the students we provide individual and small-group work with our expertly trained teachers of Special Educational Needs (SEN). Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme All students taking part in the SEN programme follow an Individual Education Plan (IEP) developed by the SEN Department who work in collaboration with administrators, leadership, Key Stage Coordinators, Counsellors, EAL (English as an Additional Language) and mainstream teachers, as necessary. This plan is reviewed twice a year where teachers, parents and administrators are invited to contribute to the meeting. The SEN Department also has a referral process in place to refer existing students at any time of the year. Our admissions policy requires parents to declare if their child or children have any special learning needs. Apart from normal admission tests, the school also requires standardised assessments (psycho-educational reports) from Year 1 throughout the Primary School, and in Year 9 in the Secondary School to assess the needs of a child and to see if s/he would benefit from the programme. This enables us to track students’ progress more effectively, to identify learning needs more quickly as well as gifts, talents and language needs more precisely. English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme We welcome students for whom English is an additional language (EAL) to their mother tongue. For some students this may mean that they have had little or no experience of the English language prior to starting at the school. Our EAL programme is designed to support these students, to integrate them into the curriculum and to help them make good progress. In part, the students work in small groups or individually on an English immersion programme with specially qualified EAL teachers. As part of our inclusive approach, our aim is always to return the students to the mainstream classroom environment as soon as they may benefit from it.
