awahar Navodaya Vidyalaya known as JNV are Indian schools for talented children and form a part of the system of gifted education. Its significance lies in the selection of talented rural children as the target group and the attempt to provide them with quality education comparable to the best in a residential school system, without regard to their family's socio-economic condition.
They are located all over the country, except Tamil Nadu. There are approximately 593 JNVs across India as of 2010. Admission process includes an All India Entrance Exam, held at district level.
First established in 1985 at Rohtak, Haryana and Amravati, Maharashtra, they are the brain child of P. V. Narasimha Rao.They were started during Prime Ministership of Rajiv Gandhi to find and foster talented children from the rural parts of India. They started with the name Navodaya Vidyalayas and renamed later as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the birth-centenary year of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is made through national level competitive examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education and the children are admitted at class VI level. Children are also being admitted against the vacant seats in class IX and in class XI also through regional level examination/marks in the previous qualifying examination. Education in Navodaya Vidyalayas is free of cost. A total of 75% of seats are reserved for rural children and a minimum of 33% of seats are reserved for girls. SC/STs also have due reservations of 15% x 7% respectively.
