Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is the standardized test required for doing MBA or PhD in Business Management or any other graduate management programmes from a business school in US, Europe and Canada.The GMAT test is developed and administered by the US-based Pearson VUE under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. This implies that Pearson VUE conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For conducting the test, Pearson VUE has appointed testing centers in various countries. GMAT is held all round the year in more than 150 countries around the world.
It is the test that measures the verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills of the candidate (i.e the test taker). Designed specially for business schools, this computer-based test helps to assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management.
Nearly 900 management institutes all over the world use the GMAT score for admission to MBA program. Many universities in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore also use GMAT scores for their admission. It is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and may also be referred as 'GMAT CAT'.
The registration fee for the GMAT is USD 250. If you want to reschedule the date, time, or location of your test you have to pay a rescheduling fee of USD 50. There is a USD 80 refund if you cancel the test a minimum of seven days before your test date.
On the day of the GMAT you can send your scores to 5 schools for free. Every additional score report you request after the test will cost USD 28/ report requested. The scores are valid for 5 years but ideally Universities accept scores for the test taken in the last 3 years.
Applyng Candidates need to be completed their 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board.
Apart from that, any person who is either doing graduation or working can give the exam. However, person below 18 years of age has to first send a written form to GMAT Customer Services of their respective region signed by his/her parents or guardian. This acts consent of parents allowing the student to take the test and also indicates their agreement to the terms and conditions of the test.
Applying for GMAT consists of some well-defined steps-
1.Firstly, you need to select the test center. There are number of prelisted test centers available at the official site of GMAT, www.mba.com. You can just go through them and select the one nearest to you.
2.After that you need to register for the exam, i.e. have to make an appointment with the selected test center for the exam. You can find out the available timings at your selected test center while making the registration. There are three ways of making the appointment.
The GMAT exam consists of three main parts.
1. The Analytical Writing Assessment- The Analytical writing section consists of two short essays to be written in 30 minutes each. The first is the Analysis of an Issue, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated. For both the essays, the emphasis is on the "Analytical" part, and not on the "Writing" part.
2. The Quantitative section - The Quantitative section has two types of questions: Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. The topics covered by this section are-
• Arithmetic
• Elementary Algebra and
• Basic Geometry
3. The Verbal section- The Verbal Section has three types of questions: Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning, and Reading Comprehension.
The GMAT tests requires your fundamental skills and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study.
There are a total of 78 questions- 37 in Quantitative and 41 in Verbal. These 2 sections have a time limit of 75 minutes each.
