Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering is mainly the study about the effect of technological advances on the environment. It is also defined as the integration of Science and Engineering principles which is the authoritative peer-reviewed journal publishing state-of-the-art studies of innovative solutions to problems in air, water, and land contamination and waste disposal. Published monthly online, the Journal features applications of environmental engineering and scientific discoveries, policy issues, environmental economics, and sustainable development . .

It is more concerned to find out plausible solutions in public health field , such arthropod-borne diseases, implementing law which promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas.

Environmental Engineering Science covers following portions:-

Climate change
Complex and adaptive systems
Contaminant fate and transport
Environmental risk assessment and management
Environmental sensors
Green technologies
Industrial ecology
Sustainability
Environmental policy
Energy and environment

Environmental Engineering programs follow either the Civil Engineering department or Chemical Engineering department at most of the Engineering institutes.

Environmental "Civil" engineers focus on -hydrology, water resources management, bioremediation, and water treatment plant design.

Environmental "Chemical" engineers, focus on- environmental chemistry, advanced air and water treatment technologies and separation processes.

Pay Scale for Environmental Engineers:-

  • Candidates after completion of their course in B.E/ B.Tech in environmental engineering can earn their initial salary around Rs. 15,000 - Rs.30,000 every month.
  • Candidates with a postgraduate degree can earn initially within the range of Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 50,000 and those with a Ph.D degree can earn in between Rs. 50,000 - Rs. 75,000.
  • A licensed engineer can expect a salary of Rs.1 lakh per month. MNCs operating on environment projects offer lucrative pay packages and perks to environmental engineers. Scientists who are working in government sector can start earning in the range of Rs. 12,000 to Rs 18,000 per month.

Environmental engineers and scientists are playing a major role in protecting the environment.  Many environmental scientists and biologists are being employed in Textile mills, refineries, fertilizer plants, food processing, distilleries, mines and other industries in order to for monitoring the levels of pollution.

Environmental engineers who are qualified in Chemical, Biological, Thermal, Radioactive or even Mechanical engineering as environmental engineering have immense scope in India .

Job prospects for professionals with qualification in environmental engineering can seek employment in research centres, NGOs and various private as well as government organizations working towards green development.

Candidates with M.Tech in environmental engineering have opportunities to work for Government built assessment committees which study and analyse the environmental risks involved in certain projects. The report of such a committee is then submitted to the concerned authority for further observation. Scholars with PhD in environmental engineering can opt for teaching jobs in colleges and universities.

As environmental engineering is a diverse segment various segments of engineering come up with important role in it. Engineers from various disciplines have varied range of roles in environmental engineering; some of them are as follows:
