Civil Engineering is one of the core disciplines of Engineering that envisages the implementation of science and technology while planning, designing and executing; ultimately producing what is known as the ‘Architectural Wonders’. A civil engineer is entrusted with a social responsibility as this professionals are required to design, supervise and construct public works like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems, ports and so forth . The major specializations within civil engineering are structural, water resources, environment engineering, construction, transportation, geo-technical engineering, bridge engineering, hydraulics, water and waste treatment etc. These professionals also cater to testing the quality and recycling of materials, utilization of new materials and innovative construction techniques, thereby preventing the effects of natural catastrophes.Civil engineers work in teams or in coordination with many other engineers and architectures. Job opportunities for civil engineers are expected to increase as there is a surge in the construction industry with both public and private investing in development of infrastructure. The government departments like public health, irrigation or public works offer ample job opportunities to civil engineering graduates. However, private sector provides greater job opportunities. A fresh graduate of civil engineering one can acquire experience in various road projects, building work, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or housing societies. The demand for experienced civil engineers in developed countries has grown manifolds, thus indicating a possibility of migration from India to Canada, Australia and other countries for better career prospects.According to an estimate, over 50,000 new jobs in the civil engineering sector are coming up every year across the country in the private sector. Moreover, the Centre has announced investment of over Rs 50,000 crore in the infrastructure sector in the next few years. The increasing emphasis on research, planning and cost control activities in this scenario of strong competition also highlights the increasing demand of civil engineers.Considering all these factors, the number of civil engineers should increase significantly over the coming years not only in India but also abroad.

As already stressed civil engineers form the backbone for any country’s development. Especially as India is a developing country so the need for the civil engineers is all the more important for the development of the country. Career Opportunities exist in the public and private sectors encompassing all the branches of design, construction and maintenance, infrastructure development in both India and abroad. In the present scenario there is a surge of growth in infrastructure requirement throughout the country. Scope of civil engineers is also immense in countries in middle-east, Africa, Asia and Indian engineers are in great demand. There is also increasing demand for civil engineers in western countries as well because of increase in basic research and technological sophistication of US manufacturing and services owing to international competition and high standard of living. Civil Engineers can find job research and teaching institutions. After pursuing Bachelors degree in civil engineering one can opt for job in road projects, building work, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or go for teaching and research to gain experience to improve their prospects. They can also opt for higher studies in India or abroad by doing MS in civil engineering and then do PhD and research.
