Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College established in 1961 is a premier Engineering College in the State of West Bengal. The College is situated at the outskirt of Jalpaiguri Town, the Divisional HQ of seven Districts of North Bengal. The College offers Bachelor degrees (B.Tech) in six branches and Master degrees (M.Tech) in two branches of Engineering.
JGEC is a residential institution, with over 1600 students residing on campus. It offers students the opportunity to participate in over 14 active clubs and Organizations such as: Music Club, Drama Club, Magazine Club, Photography Club, Nature Club, Trekking Club, Art Club, Athletic Club, Center for Innovation, Literary Society and others. Campus facilities include: A library having 15,000 titles and 40,000 volumes of books along with software for library management and documentation Power House with 250 KVA Captive Diesel Power Generating Set. One of the best advantage of this institution is that there is no political party, though elections are held yearly for the union body.
The Training and Placement Cell has been taking constant initiatives to introduce the students to the corporate world by organizing soft skill training on a regular basis beginning with the Second Year Students with the help of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Kolkata.
Some of the companies in which students of the college have secured placements in recent times are: Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), IBM, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, BOC, Tech Mahindra, Larsen & Tuobro (L&T), Vedanta, ALSTOM, Haldia Petrochemicals, Hutch, Tega, CESC, Blue Star, Reliance, M N Dastur & Co., McNally Bharat, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd., etc.
