Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is one of the 16 IITs in India which are known for their excellence and supremacy in the field of engineering and management studies. Commonly known as IITR, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is also among the foremost institutes which have national importance in the field of higher technological education and in applied research, basic and engineering. IITR was formerly known as the University of Roorkee during the years 1948-2001 and Thomason College of Civil Engineering during the years 1853-1948. Later it was turned to be an IIT in the year 2001 and got the badge of being the seventh IIT in India. The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) offers Bachelor’s degree in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and also offer Postgraduate’s degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Architecture and Planning. The institute also facilitates their students with the doctoral work in all their departments and Research Centres.
Campus-
Learning at IITR has its own importance as that of the IITs but along with this, IITR owns the modern as well the old traditional heritage of around 150 years as it the first IIT which has its existence from the age of the British India. The main campus of IITR is expanded in an area of around 365 acres of land which has the beauty of the traditional Indian embedded with that of the modern traditions. Apart from the main campus, IITR has also a campus of area 25 acres in Saharanpur which offers courses in Process Engineering, Paper Technology and Polymer Science. In the addition to their extent of their campus, IITR also has a 10 acres campus at Knowledge Park II of the Greater Noida which has 16 lecture rooms, a computer centre, library, software laboratories and faculty offices. The IITR campus has 16 hostels of which three hostels are for girls, six hostels for married students, doctoral students and foreign students. The campus of IITR is like a small town with all the facilities made available within the boundaries of the institute.
