The Government College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu (GCET) was established in the year 1994 under All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) norms vide Notification No.F-18-1/93-AICTE/910 dated: April 30, 1993 and is affiliated to University of Jammu, Jammu. The inauguration of the college was done by the then His Excellency, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, General K.V.Krishna Rao on 5th October, 1994 at Old University Campus, Canal Road, Jammu. This was the first Institute of its kind in Jammu region.
New Campus of GCET has also come up on an area of 869 Kanals of land at Chak Bhalwal, Jammu near Amb Ghrota which is 22 Kms. away from Old University Campus, Canal Road, Jammu. The construction work under Phase-I comprising of Departments of Computer Engineering and Civil Engineering besides Common Lecture Halls and Hostel Block has been executed by JKPCC Ltd., where as Construction Work for Mechanical Engineering Block under Phase-II is going on. The College New Campus was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Jenab Ghulam Nabi Azad on August 12, 2006 and as per his directions on that day, three Engineering Departments of Civil, Computer, Electronics & Communication Engineering stand shifted and are fully functional at New Campus, Chak Bhalwal, Jammu. The Departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering besides Applied Sciences Department and Administrative Department are presently functioning at Old Campus of GCET.
Nine Academic Departments are involved in the Teaching/Training work from 1st to 8th Semesters i.e. Five concerned Engineering Departments and Four Applied Sciences Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities & Social Sciences.
So far, students of Eleven batches from 1994 to 2004 have already passed out from GCET whereas the students of 2005, 2006 & 2007 Batches are presently promoted to 7th, 5th & 3rd Semesters respectively, whereas, admission for 1st Semester (2008 Batch) is under process.
