It was a vision to establish a centre of professional learning where pursuit of knowledge and excellence was not to be barred by nationality,language,cultural plurality and religion that drove the founders of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College to establish a world class centre of technical excellence.Established in 1961,JGEC is the second oldest of all technical institutions beside the Bengal Engineering and Science University(formerly Bengal Engineering College,Shibpur) in the state of West Bengal. At the time of its inception,JGEC was affliated to the Calcutta University.For the period between 1963 and 1999,the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal, which handed over the rich mantle of technical excellence to the West Bengal University Of Technology, founded under the West Bengal University Of Technology Act,2000. From then on, JGEC has gone from strength to strength providing essential manpower to harness the flood of opportunities in the fields of engineering and technology in the state and beyond.

The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College has a highly effective and efficient Training and Placement Cell under the able leadership and supervision of Dr. S. K. Sengupta, Professor and Head, Department of Training and Placement. The college has an enviable record of securing placement of its students in both the emerging software sector,as well as traditional core engineering sectors.

The College seems to be heading towards the right direction increasing the employbility of its students, not only with the right technical knowledge but by improving soft skills, enriched with a newly fabricated state of art Language Laboratory. The Training and Placement Cell has been taking constant initiatives to introduce the students to the corporate world by organizing soft skill training on a regular basis beginning with the Second Year Students with the help of Cognizant Technology Solutions Kolkata.
