Government Home Science College, Chandigarh was established in 1961. The college began as an undergraduate college offering Bachelors Degree in Home Science, today the college offers Masters and Doctoral degree programmes. The College is a grant-in-Aid institution affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. The College received recognition under 12B and 2f from UGC. The college has not applied for autonomous status though the University Act does have a provision for the same. The area of the campus is spread over 15 acres in an urban setting and the college has well maintained gardens, playgrounds and buildings.
The college also runs a laboratory Nursery School, Chaitanya with 50 students on its rolls, attached to department of Human Development and Family Relations to impart practical training to its students. The college has made its mark through its participation in the Adult and Community Education Schemes of Panjab University and offers short term training to the Gram Sevikas and Associate Village Women of U.T. Chandigarh, besides undertaking projects offered by various universities.

The college has an active placement cell which liaisons with the related industry and ensures interview and placement of students. It holds regular workshops on personality development, resume writing and associated skill development activities. Soft skill development and entrepreneur workshops are also held regularly.
