It was established in 21 July 1952 with the 3 faculties of Mechanical, Electronics and Engineering. It came into existence for providing high quality education to the students. The motto of it's establishment i to provide necessary funds for the establishment of educational institutions. This college is selected by the world bank to participate in the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). It is declared as the best engineering college of Tamil Nadu in the year 2007. It has well established infrastructure equipped with all the facilities for the students. It offers many undergraduate and post graduate courses.
The department arranges campus interviews and employment tests with organizations for the final year students to get employment immediately after graduation and to become familiar with employment interviews and tests which they may still have to face in future. The department arranges interviews for the pre-final year and final year students for the direct entry into the Indian Navy under the University Entry Scheme.
